Bloomington, IN: The 121st playing of the Trans-Mississippi Amateur Championship commenced today at The Pfau Course at Indiana University with a field of 144 of the top amateur golfers worldwide. They are all vying to put their names alongside Colin Morikawa, Will Zalatoris, Bryson DeChambeau, and Jack Nicklaus. The Trans-Mississippi is the fourth Elite Amateur Golf Series stop, which designates the top amateur competitions this summer.

The players took advantage of perfect course conditions and fantastic weather to light up the course with birdies. First-round leader Lance Simpson fired a bogey-free round of -7 (64). Simpson is ranked 24th on WAGR with 8 top 10 finishes and played in the U.S. Open at Oakmont. Just a shot behind Simpson, JP Odland and Mid-Amateur Connor Doyle carded six under (65).  Another shot back at minus 5 sits Isaiah Ibit, Canada, and Danial Zoe, USA. Overall, a total of thirty-one players broke par on the challenging Pfau course.  Players from 11 countries and 23 states have descended on Bloomington for this championship.

At 7330 yards, par 71, the Pfau Course is no small test for the players. Last week, over 8” of rain poured down on the course, causing several days of closure. Special thanks to the staff at the course and the superintendents’ crew for their outstanding efforts to bring the course up to championship-level play. Over 60 volunteers have assisted with the championship and provided scoring after every three holes.

Round 2 commences at 8:00 A.m., with the 36-hole cut to the low 54 players and ties.
