Bryan Hoops, from Tempe, AZ, fired a final round 67 (-4) that included six birdies and a double bogey to hold off a hard-charging Mike McCoy, or Norwalk, IA, who finished alone in second two shots back. Hoops made the turn at one-under for the day, while McCoy, who started two shots back of the leaders, turned at -2 and promptly birdied holes 10 and 12 to cut the margin to 1. Hoops in the final group birdied the same two holes early on the back nine to keep the lead. A late birdie on 15 with McCoy playing in front gave Hoops the lead for good. “Every time I looked at the scoreboard, players were making birdies, so I had to stay aggressive”, stated Hoops. Five players shot final round 67’s (-4), keeping all the players watching the ever-changing leaderboard.
Mark Morgan, of Shingle Springs, CA, slept on a five-shot lead in the Super Senior Division before the final round and must have slept well, firing another under-par round of 69 to win the division by 4. Morgan fired all three rounds in the 60s and was hard to overcome. Adam Kugler, Edwards, CO, who finished second, fired a three-under (68) to close the gap slightly and was the only other player to finish under par in that division.
The Legends Division took extra holes to crown a champion. Jody Vasquez, of Fort Worth, TX, fired a final round 70 to make up his four-shot deficit to Dave Runberg, of Centennial, CO. In extra holes, Rundberg fired his second shot in tight and made the birdie putt to seal the victory. Runberg’s consistent play all week made it tough for players to make up any ground.
