What is Advice. Any verbal comment or action (such as showing what club was just used to make a stroke) that is intended to influence a player in:

  • Choosing a club,

  • Making a stroke, or

  • Deciding how to play during a hole or round.

What is NOT Advice.

  • The location of things on the course such as the hole, the putting green, the fairway, penalty areas, bunkers, or another player’s ball,

  • The distance from one point to another, or

  • The Rules.

Giving and Receiving Advice. (Rule 10.2a) You may not give or receive advice during a round from anyone other than your caddie or partner. Before, between or after a round, there is no limitation on giving or receiving advice.

Touching Equipment. (Rule 10.2a) You must not touch another player's equipment to gain or learn information that would be considered advice if it were given or asked for by another player. For instance, removing a towel covering a player's bag to see which club that other player is missing.

Pointing out a Line Not on the Putting Green. (Rule 10.2b(1)) Anyone may point out a line or place an object to show the line of play for another player that is not about to make a stroke from the putting green. If an object (towel, water bottle, stick, etc.) is placed on the ground to indicated a line of play, it must be removed before the player makes the stroke.

Pointing out the Line on the Putting Green. (Rule 10.2b(2)) A caddie or partner is the only person who may point out the line of play on the putting green. This means the caddie or partner may touch with his/her finger, a club, the flagstick, his/her foot, their shadow, etc. any spot the player should putt towards. It is important to note that this may only be done before the stroke is made and must not be left in place while the player is making a stroke. Click HERE  to see the video explanation.
