Tulsa, OK: Southern Hills Country Club is hosting the 122nd Trans-Miss Golf Association Amateur Championship. This is the fifth Trans-Miss Championship hosted by the club, with the last event held in 2014, when Will Zalatoris lifted the coveted trophy. After 10” of rain over the last 10 days, Southern Hills was not its usual firm and fast, and players took advantage of light winds and softish greens. With warmer temperatures and expected breezier conditions, Southern Hills may put a bit more bite in tomorrow's playing conditions.
University of Florida golfer and Oklahoma native Parker Sands posted a stellar round of seven-under 64. Sands bogeyed his first hole of the tournament but made two birdies on the front nine to turn at one under, then caught fire on the back nine, which included six birdies. Just one shot back is Harry Crockett of England, whose six-under-65 was the low round of the morning, with Mike Zihang Qiu matching 65 in the afternoon.
This year also marks the 125th Anniversary of the Trans-Mississippi Golf Association that has crowned champions like Charlie Coe (5x champion), Jack Nicklaus (1958 & 59), Deane Beaman, Ben Crenshaw, Mark Brooks, and more recently Zalatoris (2014 & 2016), Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa, Pierceson Coody, and William Mouw, all PGA Tour players.
Tomorrow's play commences at 8:00 AM, with players going off holes #1 & #10 in the morning and afternoon wave. The field of 144 will be cut to the low 54 and ties after completion of 36 holes.
