Welcome to the 2026 County Championship - Morpeth Golf Club
The County Championship is a stroke play/match play competition, which includes a nett prize (Over 1st 36 holes) and will be played at Morpeth Golf Club on Saturday 11 July 2026, with the Matchplay stages taking place from Wednesday 15 July to Friday 17 July, with the 36 hole final taking place on Saturday 18 July.
THE GEORGE RENWICK MEMORIAL MEDAL to be held for one year will be awarded to the leading qualifier with the best gross score over 36 holes on the 11 July 2026, who takes part in the match play stages of the County Championship
Qualifying consists of 36 holes stroke play on Saturday 11 July. The leading 16 qualifiers progress to the match play stages of the championship. In the event of a tie for the last qualifying place, it shall be decided by sudden death, starting from the 1st hole.
A draw will be made for the matchplay stages and players will be seeded according to their stroke play finishing place i.e. 1 v 16, 2 v 15 etc. and the match play stages will take place over 18 holes on the evenings of July 15, 16 and 17.
The 36-hole final will be played in the morning and afternoon of Saturday July 18. In the event of a tie in any of the match play rounds, the competitors shall play sudden death hole by hole, using the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th holes.
In the event that this competition is oversubscribed, a review will take place on those entrants who have more than 4 General Play scores in their last 20, should there be a 2 shot difference between the General Play and Competition scores, they will be balloted out, any further balloting will be done on a strict handicap basis. The maximum Handicap Index is 7.4.
The winner will go on to represent Northumberland in the Champion of Champions event at Woodhall Spa Golf Club on the weekend of 12 and 13 September 2026.

Decision making Sub-Group- In the event that there are any issues which occur in advance or on the day of an event, a decision making sub-group will consider appropriate actions and advise Competitors should there be a need to change the Terms of Competition at short notice.
After being confirmed into the event, competitors will by courtesy of Morpeth Golf Club, be allowed one free practice round. Please phone the Club on 01670-504942. Times must be booked in advance, with the Professional, in order that the course is available to you.
ELIGIBILITY: Players must have been born in Northumberland or be a member of an affiliated Northumberland Club and have not played in a Championship of another County the same year and be an affiliated member of a golf club.
DRESS: Competitors wearing Jeans, Tee Shirts, or Non-Golf Shoes will not be allowed to play and the dress rules of the Host Club will apply.
BUGGIES: No sit on buggies permitted unless over 80 years of age or with a medical certificate showing an inability to walk 36 holes and buggies must be permitted by the Host Club.
ENTRIES: Entries close on Saturday 27 June 2026. Late entries will be placed onto the reserve list.
No ENTRY FEE will be refunded once entries are closed.
The NUGC reserves the right to restrict the number of entries, refuse any entry and shall also determine the starting times.
