Junior away day – Cumberwell Park

On a glorious early spring morning, 30 bleary eyed county junior boys set off to Cumberwell Park GC in Wiltshire. The coach journey was full of anticipation and excitement with what lay ahead.

When we arrived all of the boys made use of the wonderful practice facilities Cumberwell has to offer. Cumberwell has four loops of 9 holes as well as a par 3 course so with 45 holes of golf there is plenty for everyone, we were to play the “Orange” and “Yellow” loops.

The Orange 9 was a more exposed part of the course and very much links style; this was a real test for all the boys with a stiff 25 to 30 mph wind blowing, making club selection tricky.  Given the conditions and some of the pin placements, there were some excellent scores.

The Orange loop gave some respite as this was a more sheltered part of the course and more of a parkland feel that many of the boys are more use to. Again, some excellent golf being played resulting in some very good scores.

After golf, it was time for some well-earned refreshments, a few prizes and some final words on the day. The coach journey home was largely quiet with some tired juniors. All in all everyone had a great day with some new friendships forming and we cannot wait to get the season started.

Our thanks goes to everyone at Cumberwell Park GC for making us so welcome. The course was in great condition. Special thanks must go to Luke Perry, Mark Evans and Simon Gabbitas for their help and support on the day.
