HISTORY OF THE TPGL
50 years old and she is still running strong
The “TPGL” as it is known to most, was founded in 1970 and has established itself as one of the longest running golf associations in Illinois – if not, the oldest.
We asked several officers of the Chicago District Golf Association (CDGA) and Illinois PGA (IPGA) if they are aware of any golf group that has been around longer. Aside from men’s or women’s clubs that are inherently built into private clubs, most CDGA and IPGA folks could not think of a tournament golf club or amateur golf organization that has stood the test of time such as the TPGL.
HOW HAS THE TPGL ENDURED FOR SO LONG?
First, its membership has been the foundation to its sustainability. Over the years, the TPGL has had a unique ability to attract quality players with positive individual traits including camaraderie, joy and humor, loyalty and a strong family orientation to each other. It is quite common to see TPGL members socializing with each other after league hours in non-golf settings.
Secondly, the unique TPGL competitive format – the variety of events leading to the year-end Championship finale - has been repeatedly proven over time to create season-long interest among players of all skill levels.
Third, the continuous improvement process built into its bylaws – i.e. new committee members every two years – has provided a fresh perspective and new approach to each season.
LEADERSHIP DRIVEN BY PASSION
Above all, throughout the years, the TPGL has been fortunate to be led by committees and members who are passionate about the TPGL’s mission; who want to share it with others; who want to help members expand their enjoyment.
