PACE OF PLAY

Rule 5.6a. Unreasonable Delay of Play states: “A player must not unreasonably delay play, either when playing a hole or between two holes.”

Rule 5.6b. Prompt Pace of Play states: “A round of golf is meant to be played at a prompt pace. Each players should recognize that his or her pace of play is likely to affect how long it will take other players to play their rounds, including both those in the player’s own group and those in following groups.”

Rule 5.6b(I). Pace of Play Recommendations states: “The player should play at a prompt pace throughout the round, including the time taken to:

  • Prepare for and make each stroke,
  • Move from one place to another between strokes, and
  • Move to the next teeing area after completing a hole.

A player should prepare in advance for the next stroke and be ready to play when it is his or her turn. When it is the player’s turn to play:

  • It is recommended that the player make the stroke in no more than 40 seconds after he or she is (or should be) able to play without interference or distractions, and
  • The player should usually be able to play more quickly than that and is encouraged to do so.”

If a group is out of position, (DEFINED BELOW) the group will be alerted to the fact and will be requested to play at a faster pace and will be requested to regain their position on the course. Each member of the group will be subject to individual timing at this time (see timing criteria below).  If a golfer exceeds the maximum time allowed for a shot, she is subject to the prescribed penalty listed below. Any warning given remains in effect for the stipulated round. If a group fails to regain their position on the course, even though no individual has exceeded the maximum individual time allowed, the GROUP may be subject to penalty if the group exceeds the total time the Committee has determined that each group should take to play a hole.

OUT OF POSITION DEFINED:

First Group - At any time during the round, they exceed the allotted time to play.

Subsequent Groups - At any time during the round they, (a) exceed the allotted time to play and (b) reach a par-3 hole that is open and free of play or reach a par-4 or par-5 hole and have not played a stroke from the teeing ground before the hole is open and free of play.

NOTE: The Committee reserves the right to time a group when the Committee deems it necessary.

TIMING CRITERIA: When a group is not out of position, players are requested to play within 45 seconds. If a group is out of position, the players in the group are allowed a maximum of 40 seconds per shot. On the putting green, timing will begin after a reasonable amount of time is allowed to mark, lift, clean and replace the ball, repair her ball mark, and, on the line of putt, repair other ball marks and remove loose impediments. NOTE: Time spent determining yardages counts in time taken for the stroke.

Undue delay may also occur between strokes. Accordingly, a competitor may be subject to penalty under Rule 5.6 even if they play each of their strokes in less than the time allowed.

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 5.6:

STROKE PLAY

First Offense - One stroke

Second Offense - Two strokes

For subsequent offense - Disqualification

APPEALS:  Any appeal must be referred to the Rules Committee immediately upon completion of the player in questions round.  The Committee’s decision shall be final.
