2020 Match Play Rule Changes

Process

  1. Opponents for any given round will be available in Golf Genius and also emailed at the beginning of the round
  2. Contact your opponent and arrange a date, time, and location for you to play your match
  3. Once the date and time of the match is confirmed, e-mail these details to IGA match play coordinator at least one week before your match date
  4. You will receive from the IGA a statement of Course Handicaps for each player, the stroke allowances to be used for your match and the holes at which the strokes will be given.  Golf Genius will also be updated with the stroke holes for each match
  5. Golf Genius will be used for scoring and tracking this bracket tournament. Results will be posted and viewable from the app or online at igagolf.golfgenius.com
  6. After the match, it is the responsibility of the winner to ensure that both players have signed the scorecard.  The signed score card needs to be sent (scanned and emailed) to the tournament coordinator for Golf Genius verification.

Match Play Brackets -

  • Ranked all 32 players based on HC (low to high)
  • Take the median of all 32 HC’s for the Low/High HC bracket split –
  • Take each bracket of players (16) and listed each player 1 thru 16 (based on HC – Low to High)
  • Randomize each bracket of players (random.org) from 1 to 16
  • Assigned matches based on seeding – 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, etc.
  • Entered both brackets and matches into Golf Genius
  • Match play rounds –
    • 4 rounds for each bracket
    • 1 championship round – Low HC bracket winner vs. High HC bracket winner

Posting Scores

The IGA WILL NOT be posting all scores from this tournament; it is the responsibility of the player to return the signed cards and e-mail the final scores to the tournament coordinator.  As this is not a stroke play event, there are some special guidelines for posting scores under match play conditions:

What score to record for holes not played at all:

If a player does not play a hole (e.g. has won the match after 15 holes and chooses not to complete play on the last 3 holes), his score for that hole for handicap purposes shall be NET DOUBLE BOGEY (double bogey plus any handicap strokes you are entitled to receive based on your Course Handicapplus any handicap strokes he is entitled to receive on the hole. This hole score, when recorded, should be preceded by an "X."

Example: For a given round, a player with a Course Handicap of 10 was entitled to a handicap stroke on the first 10 allocated handicap-stroke holes. The player does not play the 18th hole (a par 4, the 6th allocated handicap-stroke hole) because he has already won the match. He shall record a score 5 for the 18th hole for handicap purposes; this consists of par (4) plus one (since it was one of the first 10 handicap-stroke holes).

Match play scoring – Example

A sample scorecard showing how a singles match play is recorded is shown below:

Player A  - course handicap 6

Vs

Player B - course handicap 10

Player B will receive a  stroke at each of the holes that have a HCP of 4 (the difference between the players course handicaps) or less (highlighted). These are indicated by dots on the scorecard

Scorecard explanation

Hole 1: Hole is halved

Hole 2: Hole is halved

Hole 3: Player A wins the hole with a score of 4 vs. a score of 7 for Player B. The result is scored as +1  or 1up  (for Player A) Note that in matchplay each hole won or lost is of equal value, regardless of whether it was won by 1 stroke, 2 strokes or more.

Hole 4: Player A wins the hole with a score of 4 vs. a score of 5 for Player B. The match score is recorded as +2, since Player A was already 1up, he is now 2up. The match score is kept cumulatively.

Hole 5: Player A wins the hole with a score of 4 vs. a score of 5 for Player B. The result is scored as +3.

Hole 6: Both players score 6 on the hole. Player B receives a stroke on this hole, so his net score of 5 wins the hole. Match score is +2

Hole 7: Player A wins the hole with a score of 3 vs. a score of 4 for Player B. The match score is recorded as +3.

Hole 8: Player B wins the hole with a score of 5, net 4 vs. a score of 7 for Player A. Match score is +2

Hole 9: Hole is halved

Hole 10: Holed is halved. Player B’s score of 5, net 4 ties Player A’s 4

Hole 11: Player B wins the hole. Match score is +1

Hole 12: Player A wins the hole. Match score is +2

Hole 13: Player A wins the hole. Match score is +3

Hole 14: Hole is halved. Match score is +3

Hole 15: Hole is halved. Match score is +3. At this point, Player A is “Dormie 3” meaning that he is +3 or 3up with only 3 holes to play. (Player A cannot lose the match, although it could result in a tie)

Hole 16: Hole is halved. Player A wins the match 3up with 2 holes to play. This is recorded as 3/2.

Holes 17 &18: These holes may be played, but do not count in the match. This is called playing the “bye”.
