In June 2021 we crowned Paul Lichtefeld and his guest Kevin Grove as the 61st Annual Jack Ryan Invitational Champions. They are back in the field again in 2022 and prepared to defend their Championship.

We are very excited about the Schedule of Events for the 2022 Jack Ryan Invitational.

I would ask you to please take a few moments to review the below details regarding this year’s upcoming 2022 Jack Ryan Invitational.

Format of Play

The field has been divided into eighteen (18) flights based on total team handicap indexes as of Thursday, June 16th, 2022.

The competition will be NET BETTER BALL (1 Best Ball of 2), MATCH PLAY.

Each team will play a 9-Hole match against the other five (5) teams within their flight.  Two (2) matches will be played on Thursday, two (2) matches will be played on Friday and the final match will be played on Saturday. All matches shall be played at 90% of your USGA Handicap as of June 16th, 2022.  The playing handicaps of all four players are reduced by the playing handicap of the players with the lowest handicap, which shall then play from zero (0).  All scores will be posted as competition scores. If you pick up on a hole, please put the score you most likely would have made on the scorecard.

Scoring of the Event

Ten points will be awarded for each nine (9) hole match as follows:

One point for winning a hole

½ point for halving a hole

One (1) point for winning a match

½ point for halving a match

Flight winners will be determined by the team with the most points of the five (5) matches.  Flight winners will advance to a 4-Hole Elimination Alternate-Shot Shoot-Out to determine the overall Champion.   Each team receives 50% of the partners combined playing handicap for the tees played.  All eighteen (18) Flight Winners will play Hole #15.  After the completion of Hole #15, six teams (the six lowest net scores) will advance to play Hole #16.  After the completion of Hole #16, three teams will advance to play Hole #17.  After the completion of Hole #17, the final two teams will play Hole #18 to determine the Overall Champion. There will be a random drawing to determine which team hits first. After play of Hole #18, the team with the lowest score wins. If the teams are tied for the low score after playing the final hole, a chip-off will decide the Champion with both players chipping, and the team with the lowest combined distance prevailing. Both chips must be on the green to win.

Ties

Ties for Flight Winners shall be resolved in favor of the team that won their head-to-head match. If that match was tied, in favor of the team with the most points in the last nine-hole match. If still tied, Round #4, then Round #3, etc. In the case of multiple ties, the team with the most points in the match played amongst those teams tied will be the winner.

Scoring

For this year’s event, we will be using an app called Golf Genius for live scoring. If you are not familiar with GOLF GENIUS, it is a simple to use APP that you can put on your phone or mobile device and will allow players to enter their scores as they play, see live leaderboard and results. As an alternative to using the Golf Genius APP on your phone, you will have the option to use the digital screens in your cart at Big Spring.

We hope this will add to your excitement and enjoyment of the event. During the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday rounds, all results will be viewed on televisions around the Big Spring and Harmony Landing Campus.  On the day of the final round, results will be available on the Main Scoreboard as well as on televisions at the Big Spring and Harmony Landing Campuses. To participate in live scoring and see all of the event details, please go to your APP Store and download the GOLF GENIUS app. Further instructions will be supplied prior to the start of Round 1. If you need help with the APP, please ask a member of the Professional Staff for assistance. During the competition rounds, there will be a GGID# on your scorecard that will allow you to easily enter your scores as you play.

All decisions on the application of the Rules of Golf will be handled by the Tournament Rules Committee.

Doubt as to Procedure: Disputes and Claims:  In match play, if a doubt or dispute arises between the players, a player may make a claim. If no duly authorized representative of the Committee is available within a reasonable time, the players must continue the match without delay. The Committee may consider a claim only if it has been made in a timely manner and if the player making the claim has notified his opponent at the time (i) that he is making a claim or wants a ruling and (ii) of the facts upon which the claim or ruling is to be based.  A claim is considered to have been made in a timely manner if, upon discovery of circumstances giving rise to a claim, the player makes his claim (i) before any player in the match plays from the next teeing ground, or (ii) in the case of the last hole of the match, before all players in the match leave the putting green, or (iii) when the circumstances giving rise to the claim are discovered after all the players in the match have left the putting green of the final hole, before the result of the match has been officially announced.

Concessions

Players may concede the next stroke, a hole, or any unplayed holes. A concession is final and cannot be declined or withdrawn.

Elimination Shoot-Out Format & Rules

  1. The team shall be the same Two-Man team as for the JRI Tournament.
  2. Teams will be randomly split into three (3) divisions.  Each division will be assigned to a group of holes to play in the shootout.
  3. Format of Play:  This is an ELIMINATION SHOOT-OUT ALTERNATE SHOT event. Each team shall choose a player to tee off.  After the tee shot is hit, it becomes the ball in play and the player’s partner plays from that position. The team continues to alternate shots until the ball is holed out.
  4. All teams shall play the first hole.  After players complete the first hole, only six (6) teams will remain. After play on the second hole, only three (3) teams remain. After the third hole, only two (2) teams remain.  After playing the fourth hole, the lowest score wins.
  5. Any teams tied with the high score that moves on to the next hole will “chip-off” to determine who moves on.  The chip-off spots are predetermined by the Golf Shop Staff.  The ball must be on the green to win a chip-off.   If the team is involved in a chip-off, the person that putted last watches his partner chip.  If a team advances via a chip-off, the player who hit the chip shall watch his partner tee off.  (This procedure shall be used for future holes and/or chip-offs) Play continues in this fashion until a winner is determined in each division.  If the two (2) remaining teams are tied after playing the fourth hole, a chip-off will decide the division winner with both players chipping and the team with the lowest combined distance prevailing.  Both chips must be on the green to win the chip-off.  First & second place in each division are awarded prizes.
  6. Example:  In the event that there are 60 teams to play, the Golf Shop will divide up teams into three (3) divisions, with each division consisting of 20 teams. Each division will be assigned a member of the Golf Shop Staff to go to their Shoot-Out holes.  One division will start on Hole #2, and continue to play #3, #4, and #5.  The 2nd Division will start on Hole #15, and continue to play #16, #17, and #18.  The 3rd Division will start on Hole #17, and continue to play #18, #1, and #11.
  7. The winners of each division will meet on Hole #18 to finalize the Elimination Shoot-Out. There will be a random drawing to determine which team hits first. After the play of Hole #18, the team with the lowest score wins. If two or more teams are tied for the low score after playing the final hole, a chip-off will decide the division winner with both players chipping and the team with the lowest combined distance prevailing. Both chips must be on the green to win.
