MIDDLETOWN– For the first time in the 47-year history of the Mulligan Interclub Team Championship, Button Hole Golf Club took home the hardware.

Earlier this summer, Kevin Blaser became the first player from Button Hole to win the Rhode Island Amateur.

But its team of Blaser, Lance Gillett, Austin Cilley and Zack Kovat took the title Monday at Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club (par 70, 6,309 yards) with a three-man team total of 4-over-214.

Wanumetonomy's first team finished second at 5-over-215.

The format for the Mulligan is individual stroke play with the best three scores of four counting.

Devin Gmitter of the host club, Mike Hamilton of Kirkbrae Country Club and Jonathan Cooper of Glocester Country Club shared the Ronnie Quinn Medalist Award with rounds of 68

Blaser and Kovat led the way with rounds of 71. Cilley and Gillett fired rounds of 72. Steady golf.

"For us, it was nice to represents Button Hole and everything they are all about," said Blaser, 47, of Somerset, Mass. "What they do for kids to give them life skills and an opportunity to learn values through golf is vital."

Kovat, Cilley and Blaser made match play in the Rhode Island Amateur back in July. Gillett lost in a playoff for the last spot.

So each of these guys got a good familiarity with the course but the conditions were the complete opposite than what they were in July.

A healthy amount of overnight rain and steady rain throughout the day softened the course up slightly. Allowing players to go at flags as opposed to playing conservatively.

The quartet made a total of 13 birdies as a team. Vital to winning a team title.

"I am hoping that by us winning today that we can raise more awareness for Button Hole," said Blaser. "If you ever find yourself in Providence and are looking to hit some golf balls, Button Hole is the place to be. We are all proud to be able to bring the Mulligan title to Button Hole."
