2022 Maine Women’s Amateur Championship

CHANGES FOR 2022

 

The Maine Women’s Amateur Championship will employ the following changes:

  1. The MWA will begin on Tuesday and end on Thursday rather than Monday through Wednesday.
  2. The MWA will be a 54-hole event with a 36-hole cut.
  3. The maximum number of entries will increase from 99 to 111 (determined by handicap index).
  4. The final round will be comprised of the low 45 players and ties.
  5. The entry fee will be reduced from $125 to $100.
  6. Eight flight winners, two from each of four flights, will be awarded after 36 holes. 

 

 

ELIGIBILITY

 

The Maine Women’s Amateur Championship is open to Maine resident amateurs. All players must be active in GHIN at a Maine Golf member club and must be in good standing as members of that club on or before the date they submit their application. Exceptions include the following:

  • Non-residents who have been members of Maine Golf-affiliated clubs for 10 years and who reside in Maine for at least five months annually are also eligible.
  • Active-duty service members who are stationed in Maine, live here, and hold membership at a Maine Golf member club are also eligible.

A competitor’s handicap index must be equal to or lower than 36.0, and a player must be able to play 18 holes in 4 hours or less.

 

FORMAT

 

The field will consist of 111 players. All play will begin off the first tee. The field will be determined by handicap indexes at the registration deadline.

 

ENTRY INFORMATION

 

All players must file an online entry for the championship. Players must apply for the championship at mainegolf.org Entries will not be taken over the phone. The deadline is July 1, 2022, at 5:00 pm. The entry fee is $100. Upon entry, players may reserve riding carts for an additional $25 daily cart fee.

 

 

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

 

The championship will consist of 54 holes of individual stroke play. A cut will be made after 36 holes to the low 45 players and ties.

 

Tuesday, July 19:                              First round, 18 holes

Wednesday, July 20:                     Second round, 18 holes

Thursday, July 21:                            Final round, low 45 and ties, 18 holes

 

In the event of a tie after 54 holes, a playoff will occur within 15 minutes of the last signed scorecard.  The winner of the championship will be decided by a hole-by-hole playoff until someone wins.

 

FOOD AND BEVERAGE

 

Food and beverage for the MWA will be available in the Grill Room. We will offer coffee and blueberry cake all three days at no charge. Additional food and beverage options will be available for purchase. 

 

After the 2nd round, we will hold an awards ceremony for the flight winners. Hors d’oeuvres will be provided by Maine Golf, and alcoholic beverages may be purchased. 

 

You are welcome to purchase a drink of your choice and enjoy it in the Grill Room. Or you may take your drink to the 18th green, where about 12 Adirondack chairs are set up for spectators to watch players finish their rounds.

 

PRIZES

 

Winner: Trophy, prize money, and title of 2022 Maine Women’s Amateur Champion.

Runner Up: Trophy and prize money

Top 4 flight finishers: Trophies (top two in each flight) and prize money in the form of vouchers added to players Maine Golf accounts. With flight finishers being determined after 36 holes, a golfer may win more than one prize.

 

 

RULES OF GOLF

 

All play will be governed by The Rules of Golf as approved by the USGA, except as modified by Local Rules. The on-site Rules Committee will have the final authority on all rulings. The competition is deemed to be closed when the trophy is awarded to the champion.

 

PACE OF PLAY

 

With the field comprised of threesomes, the expectation for pace of play is 4.15 hours. Maine Golf staff will monitor this pace, and the Committee has instructed Maine Golf staff to enforce the pace of play. 

A group determined to be off pace, will receive a warning and be monitored by a Maine Golf rules official. If the group does not return to expected pace within a reasonable amount of time, the Rules Official will assess a two-stroke penalty to the slow player within the group. If it cannot be determined who the slow player is, the Rules Official will assess a two-shot penalty to each player in the group.

 

 

RIDING GOLF CARTS AND CADDIES

 

Players will be allowed to prepay Maine Golf for riding golf carts in the championship. The fee is $25 a day per rider. Carts cannot be rented and paid for at the tournament site. Carts will be limited, so players should plan accordingly. No more than two carts are allowed in any pairing group. Caddies must walk at all times. Spectator carts will not be permitted at this event. If a player reserves a cart for three days but does not make the cut, Maine Golf will issue a $25 credit to her card.

 

 

WITHDRAWAL AND REFUND POLICY

 

Advanced entry fees will be refunded regardless of reason if Maine Golf is notified before the close of entries. Maine Golf will refund the entry fee, less $5, to cover processing fees and associated costs. Refunds of entries made by credit or debit card will be applied to the same card used for payment. After the close of entries, fees will be refunded only if the tournament remains full or in the event of injury or illness. No refunds will be given after the start of the tournament. Unusual circumstances will be considered individually and are at the discretion of Maine Golf.

 

STARTING TIMES

 

After the application deadline, starting times will be posted at Maine Golf and emailed to all players in the field. Starting times for the first day of play will be made public no less than four days before the tournament begins.

 

 

PRACTICE ROUND PRIVILEGES

 

Players will be allowed to play a single tournament practice round at a reduced rate. The fee is $30 walking and $50 riding. Tee times will be available on Monday afternoons from 3:30 – 4:30 pm on June 13, 20, and 27. There may be availability on July 18 as well, but this is course dependent. This is a one-time only practice round for tournament participants only.

 

PRACTICE RANGE USAGE

 

The practice range is available at no additional charge each day of the event. Range balls will be available at the range. The range is adjacent to the second green and third tee.

 

RESTROOMS

 

Restrooms are available in the clubhouse (next to the Grill Room), in the pro shop, after the 5th green in the swimming pool area (signs provided), and the hut next to holes 11 and 13.

 

CONDITIONS AND SCHEDULES

 

The MSGA Tournament Committee/on-site Rules Committee reserves the right to alter any of the conditions, provisions, and/or schedules herein. The decision of the Tournament Committee/on-site Rules Committee in any matter is final.

 

SCORECARD

 

The home course scorecard is unofficial and has no status. 

 

SUSPENSION OF PLAY DUE TO A DANGEROUS SITUATION

 

Local Rules as prescribed in Section 8J of Committee Procedures are in effect. All practice areas are closed during suspension for a dangerous situation until the Committee has declared them open. Players who practice on closed areas will be asked to cease doing so; failure to do so may result in revocation of entry.

  • Discontinue Play Immediately: One prolonged signal note.
  • Discontinue Play: Three consecutive short signal notes, repeated. Players may finish hole if started under Rule 5.7b (2).
  • Resume Play: Two short signal notes.

 

CLOSE OF COMPETITION

 

The competition is deemed to have closed when the trophy has been presented to the winner or, in the absence of a prize ceremony, when all scores have been approved by the Committee
