2023 WA Golf Rules of Golf Workshops

The USGA and R&A have updated the Rules of Golf for 2023 and Washington Golf will be conducting a series of in-person Rules of Golf Workshops to teach the new Rules. Attendance is open to the public and the workshops are designed for those with all levels of Rules knowledge from beginner to advanced. Each workshop will cover a different set of topics and attendees can choose to attend an individual workshop or can attend all three to learn the full Rules of Golf.

 

*PGA Professionals will receive seven (7) PGA PDR credits for each workshop they attend.

 

Dates:

  • Workshop #1 - Saturday, January 21, 2023
  • Workshop #2 - Saturday, February 18, 2023
  • Workshop #3 - Saturday, March 11, 2023

 

Site: Fairwood Golf & Country Club, Renton, Wash. 

 

Time: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with multiple breaks and lunch. 

 

Seats Available: 75

 

Cost: $25 per workshop. Individuals who register for all three will receive a $15 discount on the total cost.  

Registration Includes: Workshop, Rules of Golf book, Lunch Buffet, Coffee/Tea and Refreshments. Individuals who register for all three workshops will also receive an Official Guide to the Rules of Golf

  • Workshop #3 – Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. (PST)

 

Instructors:

Mike Peluso – Mike has been an expert in the Rules of Golf for more than 20 years and serves as the Director of Rules Education and Recruitment for the Washington Junior Golf Association. He has officiated at all levels of amateur golf, including numerous USGA and NCAA National Championships.

 

Tom Johnson – Tom is also a long-time certified expert in the Rules of Golf and regularly officiates at WA Golf, PNGA, USGA, and NCAA events. He has spent many years serving on the U.S. Senior Amateur Committee and has officiated at many national championships as well as multiple World Team Amateur Championships. 

 

Dress Code: Business casual or golf attire. Please no blue jeans, sweat pants or t-shirts.

 

Topics Covered: The Rules covered during each workshop are listed below. Each workshop will have multiple breaks during the day as well as an hour break for lunch, which is included in the cost of registration.

  • Rule 1 – The Game, Player Conduct & The Rules
  • Rule 2 – The Course
  • Rule 8 – Course Played as it is Found
  • Rule 3 – The Competition (Match Play and Stroke Play, Individual)
  • Rule 5 – Playing the Round
  • Rule 6 – Playing a Hole
  • Rule 7 – Ball Search

 

Workshop #2 - Saturday, February 18, 2023

  • Rule 6.3 & 6.4 – Substituted Ball and Wrong Ball
  • Rule 14 – Procedures for Ball; Marking, Lifting and Cleaning; Replacing on Spot; Dropping in Relief Area; Playing from Wrong Place
  • Rule 18 – Stroke-and-distance Relief; Ball Lost or Out of Bounds; Provisional Ball
  • Rule 17 – Penalty Areas
  • Rule 19 – Unplayable Ball
  • Rule 12 – Bunkers
  • Rule 13 – Putting Green (Including the Flagstick)
  • Rule 4 – The Player’s Equipment

 

Workshop #1 - Saturday, March 11, 2023

  • Rule 9 – Ball Played as it Lies; Ball at Rest Lifted or Moved
  • Rule 11 – Ball in Motion Accidentally Hits Person, Animal or Object; Deliberate Actions to Affect Ball in Motion
  • Rule 10 – Preparing For and Making a Stroke; Advice and Help; Caddies
  • Rule 15 – Relief from Loose Impediments and Moveable Obstructions
  • Rule 16 – Relief from Abnormal Course Conditions
  • Rule 20 – Resolving Rules Issues During Round; Ruling by Referee and Committee
  • Rule 21, 24 & 25 – Other Forms of Individual Play; Team Competitions; Modified Rules
  • Rules 22 & 23 – Foursomes; Four-Ball
