Posting Scores – The IGA WILL be posting all scores from this tournament.  As this is not a stroke play event, there are some special guidelines for posting scores under match play conditions.  For holes started and not holed out, players must record their most likely score.  For holes not played, players must record net par for the holes not played.  See the USGA Guidance.

Key Match Play Rules

  • In Match play the game is played by holes. A hole is won by the player or team who holes out their ball in the fewest net strokes.
  • Scoring is kept in terms of the number of “holes up’’ rather than by overall strokes. A hole is “Halved” (tied) if each player or team holes out in the same number of net strokes.
  • A match is won by the player or team who is leading by a number of holes greater than the number of holes remaining. If the match ends in a tie after the defined number of holes, the match is halved.
  • The player is responsible for knowing the Rules under which the competition is to be played.
  • The penalty for a breach of a rule in match play is loss of hole except when otherwise provided (see USGA Rules relating to Match Play). All other USGA Rules of Golf apply. Note: This should not be confused with incurring a “penalty stroke” as dictated in the Rules of Golf.
  • A player may concede the opponent to have holed out with his next stroke. A player may also concede a hole at any time prior to the conclusion of the hole. Concession of a stroke or hole may not be declined or withdrawn.
  • The players should determine from one another their respective handicaps before starting a match in a handicap competition. If a player begins the match having declared a higher handicap which would affect the number of strokes given or received, he shall be disqualified. The IGA will calculate your course handicaps and stroke allowances for all matches. If you believe an error was made, contact an IGA representative prior to your match to resolve the concern.
  • An opponent is entitled to ascertain, during the play of a hole, the number of strokes he has taken, including any penalty strokes. If the player gives wrong information as to the number of strokes taken, and fails to correct the mistake before his opponent has played his next stroke, he shall lose the hole.
  • Order of play is important in match play. Honor at the first tee shall be determined by coin/tee toss. The player who wins a hole shall take the honor at the next tee. If a hole has been halved, the player who had the honor at the previous tee shall retain it. When balls are in play, the ball furthest from the hole shall be played first.
  • If a player plays when his opponent should have played, the opponent may immediately require the player to cancel the stroke so played and, in correct order, play a ball without penalty as nearly as possible from the spot from which the original ball was last played. Note: Pace of play is critical, so be ready if it is your turn to play. Order of play between matches within a 4-some is not important. To speed play if it is your turn and you are not ready, let your opponent know if you are OK with them playing out of order.  Play ready golf at all times unless the match with your opponent is impacted.

Hole 3: Player A wins the hole with a score of 4 vs. a score of 7 for Player B. The result is scored as +1  or 1up  (for Player A) Note that in matchplay each hole won or lost is of equal value, regardless of whether it was won by 1 stroke, 2 strokes or more.

Hole 4: Player A wins the hole with a score of 4 vs. a score of 5 for Player B. The match score is recorded as +2, since Player A was already 1up, he is now 2up. The match score is kept cumulatively.

Hole 5: Player A wins the hole with a score of 4 vs. a score of 5 for Player B. The result is scored as +3.
