In 1962, architect Robert "Red" Lawrence carved the course from existing desert landscape at an elevation of 2,750 feet, with virtually no soil having been removed or shaped during course construction.  The environmentally “all natural” setting remains today the hallmark of the course, with no "out of bounds" markers, no fairway bunkers, and no water hazards.  The fairways are bordered by native desert vegetation and the topography is the natural rolling terrain of that part of the desert.  In 2013, the course received a full renovation by David Zinkand.  During the sequence of construction every green complex was rebuilt, every inch of rough was re-grassed and every bunker was altered or removed.
