2024 Legend Honorees:

Fred Rowland

Long-time Kansas golf standout Fred Rowland has been selected as this year’s honoree to join the Hall of Legends.

Rowland, from Overland Park, KS has distinguished himself as one of the great golfers of the “modern” era in the state. His list of accomplishments dates to his junior days when he won the 1956 Kansas Junior Championship at the age of eighteen. He has gone on to capture numerous titles in local, state and national events.

Rowland won the Kansas Senior Amateur three times (1995, 2000, ‘03) and added the Super Senior title in 2010. Along with partner Ron Brewer he captured the state Senior Four Ball three times (1996, 2000, ‘01) and the Senior Team (Super Senior Division) in 2011.

In Kansas City, Rowland was equally impressive. He won the KCGA (now Central Links Golf) Senior Amateur in 1999 and 2001 and was Super Senior Champion in 2013. He partnered with Dave Broderick to win the Heart of America Four Ball Senior Division three consecutive times from 1999 to 2001.

On the national stage, Rowland has qualified for eleven USGA Championships including the Junior (1955), Amateur (1973), Mid-Amateur (1987) and Senior Amateur an impressive six times (1994, ‘96, ‘97, ‘99, 2000 and ‘03) He played in the semi-final match in 1996. Rowland also qualified for two US Senior Open Championships (1990, ‘97).

Rust Hilst

Hilst taught at Hutchinson High School for 52 years and served as golf coach there for 31 years. His teams captured state titles in 1974 and 1995 and finished in the top-three 13 times.

He was an accomplished golfer himself. Hilst sank the winning putt that clinched the state High School Championship for Hutch High in 1960. He captured seven club championships at the renowned Prairie Dunes Country Club, he won five Hutchinson City match-play championships and holds the “unofficial” course record at Carey Park Golf Course with a score of 60.

Hilst is a regionally recognized sports broadcaster doing both football and basketball games for both the high school and Hutchinson Community College as well as national tournaments. He estimates that he has called some 5,000 games and has received numerous awards and honors for this part of his career.

As a tournament administrator for the Kansas Golf Association (now Central Links Golf) for more than four decades, he assisted in operations and course set-up as well as scoring and scoreboards. His course set-up decisions always added a special test and unexpected twists to challenge golfers of all levels.

A member of the Kansas Golf Foundation Hall of Fame (2002), Mr. Hilst is currently facing the biggest challenge of his life, having been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS) at age 80.
