85TH Illinois State Women's Amateur Championship

June 11-14, 2018

Aldeen Golf Club,  Rockford, IL

Thursday Press Release - Final Results

The weather was perfect for the final day of matches at the IWGA State Amateur Championship.  In the Championship flight Sabrina Bonanno continued her stellar play and defeated Kelly Sterling, the defending champion, 4 and 3.  Enroute to her win today she carded two birdies, hitting the flag stick on the par 5, 6th hole. Kelly Sterling provided a challenge,  but Bonanno’s play what just too good to overcome.

In the remaining flights the final results are as follows:

1st Flight  Margaret Hickey defeated Jesse Slattery, 1 up

2nd Flight  Isabella Abdullah defeated Catie Nekola, 5 and 3

3rd Flight  Amy Kucera defeated DeAnne Stolarik, 3 and 1

4th Flight  Symantha Rohwedder defeated Char McLear, 19 holes

5th Flight  Alexa Amato defeated Lilly Gentzkow, 1 up

Prizes were awarded to the winners and runners up in each flight.  In addition a plaque signed by all participants was presented to Aldeen for hosting the event. Attending the awards ceremony was Shirley Dommers IWGA 5-time Champion (1957, 1961, 1968, 1969 and 1974.)

The IWGA would like to thank the Rockford Women’s Golf Association for their help in providing refreshments and spotters for the Championship. We would also like to thank Aldeen for providing a well-groomed and challenging venue. We look forward to returning to Aldeen in 2019 for the State Junior Championship.

One of the most unusual features of the IWGA State Am is the multigenerational aspect of the field.  Ages ranged from 12 to 71.  The more experienced contestants thoroughly enjoyed playing with the younger women, and the younger women appreciated the words of wisdom and comradery.  While at the end of the day a Champion is crowned, no one loses.
