  • Tiebreaker:  USGA recommends the “Count Back” method for stroke play tiebreakers which uses scores from the last nine, six, three and then the final hole, with handicap adjustments.  The method is as follows:

  • 1. Last Nine Holes:  The scores of the tied players on the last nine holes (Holes 1-9 on Day 2) are compared.

  • 2. Last Six Holes:  If still tied, the scores on the last six holes (Holes 4-9 on Day 2) are compared.

  • 3. Last Three Holes:  If still tied, the scores on the last three holes (Holes 7-9 on Day 2) are compared.

  • 4. Last Hole:  Finally, the score on the final hole (Hole 9 on Day 2) is compared.

  • 5. Handicap Adjustments:  In some cases, handicap adjustments are applied to the scores on these holes, typically one-half, one-third, one-sixth, or one-18th of the handicap should be deducted from the score, fractions of one-half stroke or more count as a full stroke.
