Cooke Leads Impressive Field

PROVIDENCE  -- Tyler Cooke, of Wannamoisett CC, shot 3-under 67 to grab the lead after Round 1 of the 32nd Mid-Amateur Championship Monday at Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club.

Fellow Wannamoisett CC member, Billy Forcier, shot 1-under 69 for a second-place finish after Round 1.

Reigning State Amateur champion, Mike Calef, sits T3 after shooting an even-par 70 on his home course. Jeff Delucia, of Button Hole, also shot 70.

It was a perfect October day for golf on Narragansett Bay with temperatures reaching the low 80s with clear skies.

"It's spectacular," Calef said of the conditions. Superintendent "Shaun Marcellus and his crew have made the golf an 11 out of 10. It's so good. Everyone at the club has been putting in a lot of effort to host this event and making it a first-class event. With this weather, the players were really lucky to play here today."

In the senior division, Brian Foley, of Point Judith CC, and Thomas Evans, of Shelter Harbor GC, are T1 after both shooting 3-over 73.

The final round begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Brendan Lemp, of The Misquamicut Club, is not defending his 2024 Mid-Amateur Championship title this season.
