Eaton earns medalist honors to begin her title defense

RUMFORD – Kylie Eaton shot an opening round 76 to earn medalist honors during the Julie Greene Amateur Championship Monday at Agawam Hunt.

Eaton, of Kirkbrae CC, is the defending champion. She will face No. 16 seed Amanda Parker, of Pawtucket CC, in the Round of 16 Tuesday morning.

Past champion Olivia Williams and Morgan MacLeod finished T2 after both shooting 77. Hanley Correia, Elizabeth Kue and Samantha Tinsley shot 78 to finish T4.

Fittingly, this championship is named in Greene’s honor for her incredible accomplishments on and off the golf course.

No one – man or woman – has won more Rhode Island Amateur Championship titles than Greene. She won 11 times, including at least once in four decades, beginning with her first title in 1963. A former athletic director at the Lincoln School in Providence, she also took the RIWGA title in 1970, ‘76, ‘79, ‘80, ‘82, ‘84, ‘85, ‘96, ‘97 and ‘98. Among her other titles, she also has won the New England Women's Amateur twice (1972 and ‘78) and both the Eastern Women’s Amateur and twice the Eastern Women’s Senior Championship. She reached the quarterfinals twice (1975 and 1977) at the U.S. Women’s Amateur, losing both times to Beth Daniel.

Greene passed away Dec. 11, 2006. She was 70. The Barrington resident also served as an associate director of the Trans-National Golf Association, served on the executive board of the Women’s Eastern Golf Association and was a former president of that board. She also served on the USGA Junior Girls Committee and was among the organizers and leaders of the RIWGA’s Junior Golf program.
