Qualifying Entry & Eligibility Information

Entries Open: March 2, 2021 at 10:00 AM

Amateur Entry Fee: $160/player

MAPGA Member Entry Fees: $250/player

Non-MAPGA Professional Entry Fees: $500/player

 

Carts: At the qualifying sites, automotive transportation is permitted for players and caddies.  For pull cart policy at a qualifying site, contact the host club. 


Eligibility: This tournament is open to male amateur members of MSGA member clubs with an up-to-date USGA index at a licensed club of 7.1 or less; to male professionals who are Middle Atlantic PGA members or registered apprentices; to male professionals employed by member clubs; and to male professionals who are residents of Maryland. The handicap index must be current both before registration closes, and the date of the event, and must be viewable on the verification site of www.msga.org Entries may be rejected by the MSGA at any time, including during the competition.  The reason for rejection may include unbecoming conduct, such as violation of host club policies, or failure to comply with the requirements of the handicap system.  Entrants may be required to provide evidence of playing ability.

 

Exemptions from Local Qualifying: Designated players shall be exempt from local qualifying and shall advance to the first two rounds of stroke play at Country Club at Woodmore on Monday and Tuesday, July 12 & 13.  These exempt players are listed on www.msga.org – Play – Men’s Golf – Exempt Players (MD Open/Amateur). An exempt player must also meet the previously outlined eligibility requirements of the Championship.  AN EXEMPT PLAYER MUST SUBMIT AN ENTRY ON A TIMELY BASIS.

 

Refund Policy: A withdrawal prior to seven days of the event will receive a refund minus a $25.00 processing feeThere will not be a refund if a withdrawal is received less than seven days prior to the event without written medical excuse.

 

Starting Times: Tournament Starting Times will be emailed approximately 10 days before the event. Times can also be found by visiting the 100th Maryland State Open Tournament Portal or www.msga.org.

Championship Information


Format/Field Size: Eighteen (18) hole qualifying rounds will be held at Hunt Valley Country Club on Monday, April 26; at Cattail Creek Country Club on Monday, May 3; at Country Club of Woodmore on Thursday, May 13 and at Prospect Bay on Thursday, May 21.  The MSGA will make the final course assignments. The number of qualifying places shall be that number required to provide a minimum starting field of 120 players (including the exempt entrants) at Baltimore Country Club on Monday, July 12. Any ties for the last qualifying score at each site shall advance to the first two rounds at Baltimore Country Club. Any withdrawal from this field will be filled by blind draw from a pool of the remaining low scorers at the four qualifiers, which will be listed on the website. The Maryland Open will be 54 holes of stroke play with all players playing 36 holes, and then the field will be cut to the low 40 scorers and ties for the final round. 

 

Carts: At Baltimore Country Club, automotive transportation is prohibited for players AND caddies - a player may either carry his own bag or bring his own caddie.

Prizes:  Silver – winner and low amateur.  The MSGA will offer a cash prize purse to professionals based on the number of professionals that sign up: i.e. if  100 or more professionals -$45,000; 80 professionals - $40,000,  60 professionals - $35,000, etc. Amateur prizes:  merchandise certificates.  In the event of a tie for the Championship and/or low amateur (Harry Pitt Trophy), a hole-by-hole play-off will follow immediately upon the completion of play.
