SGA Event Rules

  • The winner of the tournament is the player with the highest aggregate stableford points
  • On each days’ play, the appropriate tees for men and ladies will be marked on the scorecard
  • The draw for the first round will be completed and posted on our GG Portal.
  • At the completion of play each day, cards are to be promptly submitted to the SGA scorers with names, signatures, stroke and stableford scores for each hole all clearly shown

Handicaps

The handicapping committee for the event will be made up of SGA Managing Director, Matthew Pitt (a qualified and nationally accredited handicapper), and SGA General Manager, Mick David. Players GA Handicaps and course slope and scratch ratings will be referenced to determine Daily Handicaps. Any adjustments to handicaps during the tournament will be applied with the intention of maintaining a level playing field for all entrants to ensure a fair and equitable tournament.

Caddies NTPs on all Par Threes

Each day many of us play a fun game with our caddies on the par 3s – each player puts in 25 baht (AUD$1.20) so there is a pot of 100 Baht on the tee. The caddie whose golfer hits their tee shot nearest the pin wins the 100 Baht for that hole. For ease, each player takes a turn putting up the 100 Baht on one of the par threes. It is great fun for both golfer and caddy and the caddies get very excited and involved in the contest and greatly appreciate a victory by their golfer!

The Punters Club

To add a little daily spice to the tournament, we will run an optional feature where you can back yourself throughout the week. Prior to the tournament, those interested can buy in to The Punters Club for 500 Baht (approx. AUD$24). Cash prizes are awarded each day in Thai Baht for best front nine and best back nine. You won’t be winning enough to pay for your trip, but enough to have some fun and a few drinks after golf as a reward for good play.

Local Rules

Whilst golf is a universal game with well-established and definitive rules, when we play in Thailand, we apply Thai Local Rules that take in the uniqueness of playing golf in Thailand.

  • Some of the golf courses have 27 holes, of which we will be playing 18 of them. For handicap and countback procedures, the back nine is defined as “the last nine holes on the scorecard of the course that we play that day”. The above applies regardless of what nine you tee off on.
  • If your handicap is an odd number and the hole indexes are marked 1-9 on each nine, you receive your extra shot on the back nine, as detailed in the previous point.
  • Scorecards will be labelled with your name and handicap. All strokes must be clearly marked on the card, along with stableford points for that hole. If you are unsure about stableford scoring, please consult your playing partner, or see SGA staff after the round who will help you. The player and marker must both sign the scorecard.
  • If your ball comes to rest on an ant’s nest, you may take a free drop away from the ant’s nest at the nearest point of relief, no nearer the hole. Declare to your marker what you are intending to do before moving your ball.
  • If the course has had heavy rain and the bunkers are affected with either washouts, or water in the bunkers, then your first option is to lift, then place (not drop) the ball in the bunker where it is not water affected. If the bunker is full of water then you may take a free drop from the bunker, no nearer the hole. While this is against the rules of golf, we are invoking an SGA Local Rule.
  • Some courses have drop zones that contradict the established rules of golf. In this instance, we will “Do in Rome” and play from the established drop zones that the course has declared. The caddies will be directing you to these zones so it is easy to do as your caddie instructs. You can play the R&A rule, but there will be no penalty for using the local drop zones.
  • Preferred Lies. If the course requires the use of preferred lies, then it will be a card length and through the green. This will be advised before you hit off each day.
  • For a lost ball at any point on the course (including Out of Bounds), SGA has adopted Model Local Rule E-5, which allows “Alternative to Stroke and Distance”. Also known as the “Irish Drop” Rule, this Rule allows you take a drop at a "Reference point" (which can actually be IN THE FAIRWAY), under a Two-stroke Penalty.
