Be a Gentleman

How to Be a Gentleteam

Teams consist of at least four but no more than five members. Only four members of a team will play each week in league play. But we encourage all team members to attend and play each week. Non-competing players may go out after league play but their scores will not count toward team competition.

League Fees

The league fee is $209/player. The fee includes greens fees, prize pay-ins, and a two-month pass to play as much as you can in April and May before the league starts. For teams of five it's $179/player.

League fees should be paid before the start of league play.

League Format

The format for the league will be a combination of two-man match play, and a combined four-man net scoring format. Each week, there will be a total of 20 points available for a team to win. Nine (9) points are available in each two man match (18 total) and two (2) additional points will be awarded to the team with the lower combined four-man net score.

Before the start of the round, each team will have to determine their two-man pairings and on which course (Par-3 or Exec) their pairs will play. Each two-man pairing will play with their opponent’s two-man pairing.

Two-man Best Ball Match (9 points available for each match)

The 9 holes will be broken into nine, one hole matches with 1 point available each hole. If a hole is halved then each team will receive half a point. The team score for each hole will be the best net score of one player on the team against the best net score of one player from the other team.

Four-Man Net Score (2 points)

At the end of both matches, the individual net scores of all four players on a team will be summed for a team net score. The four-man team with the lowest net score wins the remaining 2 points (winner takes all).

Substitute Players

Subs must pay $5 each week to cover the handicap fees and help pad the bank rolls for league members.

NEW IN 2018- for review: If a team has more than one sub, subs must split sides. If a team cannot field a full four-person team on a given week OR if a team has three subs (more subs than team members) the net team points will be forfeit.

If you need a sub, it is your responsibility to find a sub. Do not go through Pat to find a sub for your team.

Partial Team Scoring

If a team fields only a partial team, the four-man net score will be conceded. The best ball matches may be played one vs. two for full points in either or both of the matches.

Full Team Forfeit

If a team does not field any players on a given week, their opponent will receive 15 points. The forfeiting team will also have 5 points subtracted from their cumulative team score.

Handicaps

Each player will receive their full 9 hole handicap or a maximum of 18 strokes. All players must play from the white set of tees, and therefore will receive their course handicap from the white tees.

A league handicap will be used throughout the season based on league play scoring. All league scores must be entered. League handicaps will carry over from year-to-year. If a league handicap is not present, a USGA handicap index may be used until the league handicap is established. All league players will be using the same handicapping system as described below.

All players must start league play with either three or more 9-hole rounds at GLH played in the current league year (all rounds played at GLH should be recorded) OR a current USGA handicap. If a league player does not have a handicap before league play, they will use a provisional handicap as defined for substitute players below.

League handicap rounds will be accepted from the start of the golf season until the start of league play. All rounds played at Gem Lake Hills must be recorded by the first week of league play. All preseason rounds can be turned into the course. There will be a folder for Gentleman's scorecards. Please write your first and last names and the date of your round on the scorecard.

Practice rounds played by non-competing players may be used to establish or supplement a league handicap, but the round must be played with a non-teammate AND the intentions must be stated before the practice round. Be a Gentleman.

Handicap Calculation

The league handicap is determined using your lowest three of your past five scores relative to the rating for the course played (differential). The average of these three scores will be rounded to a whole integer [=>½, rounds up and <½, rounds down.

Equitable Stroke Control

Players may not take a score greater than three above par (6 on par 3’s and 7 on par 4’s). Players may pick-up after exceeding the ESC max.

Substitute Player Handicaps

Subs are allowed in league play. However, unless the sub can provide a current USGA handicap OR has played at least 3 rounds at GLH in league play, a probationary handicap will be provided for league play. A gentleman's agreement will be made prior to teeing off in which both teams agree to a probationary handicap for the week. Upon establishment of a probationary handicap, the substitute player may not NET lower than par for the hole. Natural scores are allowed. The probationary handicap is intended to put the team with substitute players at a disadvantage and encourage league players to be a gentleman and honor their commitments to the league.

Scoring

One player in each group will have the responsibility for maintaining the official scorecard for the round. That individual is responsible for accurately and clearly recording the scores of each player. Scorers will turn in the official scorecard at the conclusion of the round and post all scores. It is each player's responsibility to verify the accuracy of his score at the conclusion of the round.

Should there be a dispute relative to the interpretation of the rules, method of play, or incorrect handicap, such disputes shall be directed to the League Manager for a final ruling.

Scoring Example

Each player in the match is listed on one scorecard. The teammates are grouped and separated by an empty row. Each week, designate one player to keep the official scorecard. All that is required of the official scorer is to keep gross scores and capture the players’ handicaps for the week in the HCP column. If you want to take it even further, put a dot in the box of the hole in which each player gets a stroke from their handicap. If a player has a handicap of 5, they receive a stroke on the holes handicapped 1-5.

League Rulings

The following rules are league rulings that vary from USGA rules of golf.
